KUCHING: Preparations are underway for Lubok Antu’s first-ever food festival which is scheduled to take place from October 13-15.

Deputy Minister of International Trade, Industry and Investment (MINTRED), Datuk Dr Malcolm Mussen Lamoh said the festival promised to be a unique blend of culture and gastronomy.

“It aims to promote Lubok Antu’s rich culture and cuisine while welcoming visitors from near and far to experience the warmth and hospitality of this border town,” he told a press conference at his office at Wisma Sumber Alam here.

“One of the highlights of the festival is the “ikan pansuh” competition, a traditional fish cooking contest. “Ikan pansuh” from Batang Ai is renowned for its exceptional taste and unique preparation method, making it a star attraction for both locals and international visitors,” he added.

The festival’s itinerary includes a range of activities, from “Sukan Rakyat” competitions like tug of war and “menyumpit” to exhilarating karaoke contests.

“The evening will come alive with performances by singers, including veteran artistes Linda Simai, Jeff Dom and Eyqa Saiful.

Roy Angau Jiko, MP of Lubok Antu, will officiate at the festival’s grand opening on the second day while Malcolm will preside over the closing ceremony on the last day.
After this, there will be captivating performances by guest singers.

The highlight of the closing day is the “mansuh” competition; 20 participants will prepare fresh red tilapia, using bamboo sticks, fish, salt, ajinomoto and various seasonings.

“This event aims to showcase Lubok Antu’s culinary prowess and promote the local cuisine, especially the famous red tilapia,” explained Malcolm.

While this year’s competition is limited to Lubok Antu residents, plans are afoot to expand participation to neighbouring areas in the coming years.

With 60 stalls set up for the food festival, visitors can also indulge in an array of delectable dishes.
