KUCHING: Two women narrowly escaped serious injuries or possible deaths after the bonnet and front part of the multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) they were in were hit by a falling metal pole when disembarking at the Rambungan ferry jetty yesterday morning.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Aidi Ismail, when contacted, confirmed the incident happened at around 8.30am.

“No loss of lives was reported during the incident and investigations are being carried out by the Lundu District Police Headquarters,” he said yesterday.

Meanwhile, Lundu District police chief Deputy Supt Damataries Lautin said the incident was reported to have occurred at about 8.27am when the two victims, who were in their 50s, were getting off  the ferry and heading towards Kuching.

“Suddenly, a metal pole nearby collapsed and hit the Proton Exora MPV that one of the victims was driving, causing severe damage to the bonnet and front portion of the vehicle.

“Both women did not suffer any injuries,” he said.

He said the ferry captain had also reported the incident to the Lundu District Police Headquarters at about 1pm.

Damataries said the cause of the incident was still under investigation.
