KUCHING: A local man was pronounced dead after he allegedly fell into the river from the Batang Salak Bridge today (Feb 20).
A spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) identified the deceased as Voon Nyuk Shii, aged 34.
Firefighters from the Petra Jaya station were dispatched to the scene at Jalan FAC after receiving a distress call around 2.03 pm.
Two men, who were fishing under the bridge, claimed that the victim is believed to have fallen from the bridge.
One of them bravely leaped into the river and swam out to rescue the victim.
The victim, who was unconscious, was pulled to the shore. Despite resuscitation efforts, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics at 2.58 pm.
The body was taken to the hospital for further action. The operation concluded at 3.20 pm.
