Man duped into buying non-existent face masks

SIBU: A man suffered a loss of RM11,720.70 after being tricked into buying face masks online.

Sibu district police chief ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said the scam began on March 30 when the 37-year-old complainant contacted person to buy 158 boxes of masks.

“The person paid RM11,720.70 online including shipping costs into an account according to instructions,” he said.

Last Apr 14, the buyer received three types of face masks, but the amount was less than what was ordered.

“On Apr 23, he received a face mask box, but inside were different items such as bread, soap and spaghetti.

“The shipping company informed him that 24 boxes of face masks had been returned to them in Kuala Lumpur. He did not know if they were the right face masks or not,” he said.

Stanley added that the buyer tried to contact the shipping company but failed.

He also contacted the seller to ask for a refund, but to this day, the seller had not returned his money.

It is believed that the seller had deceived the buyer into buying non-existent face masks.

The case is currently being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code.
