Man jailed for impersonating police officer, robbery

KUCHING: A man has been sentenced to three months in prison for impersonating a police officer and robbing a 21-year-old youth in the parking lot of a cafe in BDC here last May.

Salidan, 40, pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 170 of the Penal Code before Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi on Thursday (June 22).

If convicted, he could have faced imprisonment for up to two years, a fine, or both.

The charge against him stated that he impersonated a police officer in the parking lot of a cafe in BDC at around 10pm on May 22.

In a related case at the Sessions Court, the accused pleaded not guilty to a charge under Section 395 of the Penal Code for the same robbery offence against the same victim during the incident.

However, Judge Afidah Abdul Rahman granted Salidan bail of RM10,000 with two local sureties and scheduled the next case management hearing for Aug 2.

Furthermore, on June 7, Salidan was sentenced to six months in prison and a fine of RM6,000 or four months in prison by the Magistrates’ Court in Kota Samarahan for intentionally causing injury under Section 326A of the Penal Code.

According to the facts presented, the 21-year-old victim was sitting in his car when the accused and several other men approached him, posing as police officers.

The accused conducted a vehicle inspection, claiming they needed to take it to the police station.

Moreover, the accused demanded a sum of money ranging from RM1,000 to RM3,000, but the victim stated that he did not possess that amount.

As the victim could not provide the requested money, the accused proceeded to take the victim’s mobile phone, ATM card, and identification card before fleeing in the victim’s car.

Out of fear of being assaulted, the victim exited his car while the accused and his accomplices were present.

The victim promptly filed a police report, leading to the arrest of the accused on May 30.

During the investigation, the victim positively identified the accused as the person who impersonated a police officer and stole his belongings.

The accomplice of the accused is currently evading capture and is being pursued by the police.

The prosecution was handled separately by deputy public prosecutor Iezzah Iburdanisha Ibrahim and Inspector Nur Syafiqa Nyaie Ilin while the accused did not have legal representation.
