Man jailed for theft of heavy machinery components

KUCHING: A local man was sentenced to one year in prison by the Magistrate’s Court here today (Dec 22) for the theft of components from heavy machinery owned by a transportation company last Monday.

Ahmad Farhan Amat Yusup, 25, pleaded guilty to the charges under Section 379A of the Penal Code, which were read before Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali.

According to the charges, he was accused of committing the offence by the roadside in Kampung Seratau, Siburan, at around 6.40 am on December 18.

If convicted, he could face imprisonment of not less than one year and not exceeding seven years and liable to a fine.

According to the facts of the case, during the incident the complainant, a security guard accompanied by his nephew, was patrolling around the Hitachi EX300 heavy machinery owned by a successful transportation company when they apprehended a man in the act of opening components of the heavy machinery.

The complainant then took the accused to the nearby police station for further action and investigation.

The investigation revealed that the accused had stolen heavy machinery components such as a water tank and a ‘gress pump.’ The estimated loss sustained by the company involved is approximately RM8,000.

The prosecution was handled by Deputy Public Prosecutor Inspector Nur Shafiqa Nyaie Ilin, while the accused was not represented by a counsel.
