Man pleads guilty to selling stolen gold ring

KUCHING: The court here on Friday (Dec 8) imposed a fine of RM3,000 or a three-month jail sentence on a man after he pleaded guilty to disposing of stolen property.

Muhammad Zamri Mohammad Safberi, 26, made the confession once the charge under Section 414 of the Penal Code was read before Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi.

According to the charge, he deliberately disposed of the stolen property, a gold ring belonging to his grandmother, at a gold shop in Matang Jaya, around 10am, on Nov 22.

If found guilty, he could face imprisonment for up to seven years or a fine or both.

According to the case facts, on Dec 2, around 9am, the complainant, who was at her home in Matang, discovered that two gold bracelets and a gold ring stored in a handbag placed on the living room bed had been stolen.

The estimated loss suffered by the 65-year-old complainant is around RM9,000.

A police report was made by the complainant for further action and investigation, leading to the arrest of the accused on Dec 5.

Seizures were also made at a gold shop, including a gold ring, a pair of gold earrings, and two purchase receipts.

A witness, who is an executive at the shop, confirmed that the accused had sold the ring using his father’s identification card, claiming that he did not have his identification card with him.

The prosecution of the case was led by Inspector Prosecutor Nur Shafiqa Nyaie Ilin, while the accused was not represented by a lawyer.
