Man remanded for possessing syabu

KUCHING: Police here arrested a local man for allegedly possessing drugs believed to be syabu along Jalan Rubber on Saturday (Apr 29).

Acting Kuching police chief Supt Merbin Lisa in a statement, said the arrest was made at a house around 11 pm following public tip-off.

The 28-year-old was later detained for inspections as he was suspected to be involved in substance abuse activities.

“Inspections led to the finding of 13 straw tubes containing crystalline substances believed to be syabu, kept inside a mint container.

“The drugs weighing 6.64g and valued around RM664, was seized as evidence,” he said.

Background checks found that the suspect who tested positive for methamphetamine, had six prior records related to drugs.

Merbin added that the suspect is being remanded until May 2 to facilitate investigations under Section 39A (1) and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

If convicted under Section 39A (1), the suspect may face a jail term of up to five years and whipping of the cane up to nine lashes.

Whereas if found guilty under Section 15(1)(a), the suspect may also face a fine up to RM5,000 or a jail term of up to two years.
