Man rescued after high tide strands him in forest

KUCHING: A local man was rescued by authorities after he found himself stranded in a forest at Kampung Semariang Pinggir yesterday (Feb 12) due to a high tide phenomenon.

Mohd Zulfika, 33, had ventured into the forest around noon to collect wood but became trapped as the tide rose.

According to local folks, he managed to climb a tall tree to ensure his safety while awaiting rescue.

A spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said firemen from Petra Jaya station were deployed to the scene after receiving a distress call at 7.27 pm.

Upon arrival, the team coordinated with the police and village chief, to devise a rescue plan. With the villagers’ boats, they managed to reach the stranded man on the opposite side of the river.

Zulfika was safely rescued and handed over to his family.

The rescue operation ended at 8.25 pm once Zulfika was out of harm’s way and he returned safely to his family.
