Marine police seize contrabands worth over RM160,000

MIRI: Marine police arrested a van driver and seized smuggled cigarettes, liquors and beers worth over RM160,000 in an operation last Sunday (Sept 24).

The operation codenamed ‘Ops Kontraban’ was conducted by the marine intelligence unit along Jalan Friendship here around 1 pm.

Miri police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the team stopped a van and inspected the vehicle.

“It led to the finding of 104,000 cigarette sticks, 77 bottles of liquors and 14 cartons of beers, worth RM168,428.60.

“The van driver failed to produce any valid documents related to the goods and has committed an offence under the Customs Act 1967,” he said.

The total value of the seized items including the van, is RM233,428.60.

Alexson said the case has been handed over to Miri Criminal Investigation Division (CID) for further action.
