KUCHING: The Sarawak Scout Council (SSC) is aiming to organise The Matang Warrior Trail Run on a larger scale in the future.

Following the successful second edition of the run, its president Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom said he believes there is significant potential for further expansion.

“We are looking forward to organising something even bigger through collaboration with other agencies and with the support of the state government.

“This way, more people can benefit as it goes beyond just a run; it becomes an outreach initiative,” Mawan stated during a media interview at the Matang Warrior (Survival) Trail Run 2023 held at Matang Camp, here today (July 2).

Participants overcome bad weather to complete the run.

Mawan said by organising the event on a larger scale, they can attract visitors from outside the region, thereby boosting tourism and promoting various activities akin to The Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) and similar events.

“We firmly believe in the potential of this setting, whether it’s showcasing the beautiful mountain or something even more remarkable in the future. So, what you see now is just the beginning,” he added.

Despite adverse weather conditions, the second edition of the Matang Warrior (Survival) Trail Run received an overwhelming response, as highlighted by Mawan.

“Despite the rain, the public displayed an incredible spirit, and we had participants joining us from all over the state. Considering that, I consider this event a great success,” Mawan acknowledged.

The event attracted a total of 875 participants who competed in two categories: the Fun Run (2km and 5km) and the Competitive Run (10km and 20km).

Abang Jamadi Rosli (42) and Lim Siat Fah (42) emerged as winners in the men’s and women’s open categories of the 20km race, respectively. They were awarded a cash prize of RM600 each, along with trophies.

In the 10km race, Mohammad Shahir (30) and Sally Yap (30) secured victory in the men’s and women’s open categories, respectively, also receiving RM600 and trophies.
