MATU: The Matu River, which had remained relatively quiet for a long time, has burst back to life with the Mini Regatta Matu 2023, a boat racing event taking place from June 2 to June 4.

According to Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Integrity and Ombudsman), Datuk Dr Juanda Jaya, the response to this small-scale boat racing event has been highly encouraging. He also said that the organisers, for the first time, have introduced a rotating trophy to symbolise the event’s status as an annual spectacle in the future.

“This initiative aims to showcase the uniqueness of Matu to visitors from outside while providing an opportunity for them to witness the community activities in this area. Simultaneously, we aim to create a space that offers economic opportunities for small traders,” said Juanda when met today (June 3).

Juanda, who serves as Jemoreng assemblyman, added that the success of the event signifies the cooperation and unity among the residents. He further underlined the collaboration between various parties, including Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and government agencies.

“I consider this programme a tremendous success, as it has brought our community together. The overwhelming response has injected enthusiasm among the organisers to enhance and continue this event in the future,” Juanda added.

Prior to its development, Matu River served as the vital communication lifeline and primary source of income for the residents. The event is viewed as a revival of traditions and the rejuvenation of the Matu River, which had grown quieter due to the absence of activities in the area.

Furthermore, Matu District Officer Wan Hipni Wan Mohamad, said that this year’s Matu Festival encompasses a variety of events, including boat racing.

“We have set up a total of 107 sales stalls for the festival, with 70 per cent of them occupied by local traders, while the rest come from outside the district,” he shared.
