KUCHING: In order to ensure sustainable development in Malaysia, it is important for both consumers and producers to adopt sustainable practises in their daily lives.

This was highlighted by the Mayor of Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Datuk Wee Hong Seng, who emphasised that such practices can foster innovation and lead to a more sustainable country.

To this end, the council has partnered with other organisations to raise awareness about the importance of environmental stewardship and is focusing on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 11 and 12, which pertain to sustainable cities and communities, as well as responsible consumption and production.

During the launch of the Make Climate Cool Again event at Dewan Masyarakat MBKS, Jalan Padungan today, Wee noted that the organisation has already achieved 10 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

By doing so, a community ecosystem with a shared aspiration to address environmental issues can be created, with young people becoming constructive citizens who are capable of tackling these challenges.

“By nurturing young minds early, we sow the seeds of environmental consciousness and responsibility, which will bloom into constructive environmental action one day. With that, this, in turn, will establish sustainability as a mainstream norm and culture here,” he added.

In addition to promoting sustainable habits, the council is also committed to maintaining and enhancing a clean and healthy environment. As part of this effort, the organisation will be holding regular recycling and e-waste collection campaigns on May 6.
