MIRI: Assessment rates for properties in Miri are to go up next year (2019), as the council (Miri City Council) has decided to impose a minimum of 0.5 percent charge for waste management services.

All this while, the expenses for waste management were absorbed by the council through dislodging services fee, disclosed the city mayor Adam Yii.

“For the past five years, the council has provided dislodging services free of charge by absorbing the operation costs,” he said.

Yii added as of 2018, there are about 67,247 properties under MCC’s jurisdiction.

“And for the past four years, such services have cost us (MCC) a lot of money, namely amounting to RM22 million,” Yii said when speaking to reporters after chairing a full council meeting yesterday.

For the record MCC’s annual rates have not seen reviewed for increase for 16 years.

“I believe with the increase, the council would be able to collect an additional RM1.156 million from the assessment rates,” he said.
