Military patrol foils cross-border beer smuggling

Eight cartons of various beers worth RM1,200 were intercepted by a joint military patrol yesterday.

BA’KELALAN: An evening joint patrol involving the Malaysia Armed Forces and the Indonesian National Army yesterday (Apr 14) resulted in the seizure of eight cartons containing assorted beers that were left unattended.

The Eastern Field Army Command Headquarters said the incident happened around 6 pm in Kampung Punang Kelalan, about 500 metres from the Malaysia-Indonesia border.

During a routine patrol, a team of Malaysian and Indonesian soldiers spotted suspicious black packages, which were left unattended.

“Further examinations led to the discovery of eight cartons of Golden, Tiger and Carlsberg beers.

“The beers estimated to be worth around RM1,200, were believed to be smuggled to the neighbouring country,” the army headquarters said in a statement,

The military confirmed that a police report was lodged at Ba’kelalan police station, and all the seized goods were handed over to the Ba’Kelalan Customs Division for further action.

In light of this, the army reiterated its commitment to strengthening border control measures along the Malaysia-Indonesia border to safeguard the state’s sovereignty against illegal entries, smuggling, and cross-border criminal activities.
