KUCHING: The idea of having our own state currency requires a comprehensive study before any decisions can be made.

Women, Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said the government needs to concentrate on making Malaysia’s economy better.

She highlighted the importance of identifying effective methods to boost revenue, foster a conducive business environment, and maintain stable conditions that attract both investors and foreign capital.

She praised Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s work in ‘Revenue Reengineering’.

“While using our own currency could be beneficial because of our strong economy, we are still part of Malaysia. Right now, our main focus should be on improving Malaysia’s economy as a whole,” Fatimah said.

However, she expressed concern about the Malaysian ringgit losing value, especially compared to currencies in neighbouring countries.

Deputy Minister of Utility and Telecommunications, Datuk Liwan Lagang, said that the suggestion made by Federal Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi could be considered if the conditions in West Malaysia are not favourable for economic growth due to political issues.

“Of course, we need to carefully study and analyse the situation and consider our nation’s needs based on our constitution,” he told New Sarawak Tribune on Saturday (Sept 2).

“I believe that Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi must have thought about it deeply before making the suggestion,” he added.

Nanta said that Sarawak might think about introducing its own currency during a special podcast marking National Day and Malaysia Day, titled “From Malaya to Malaysia: 60 years,” on Friday.
