Miri’s new MP says he’ll keep his election promises

KUCHING: Miri MP Chiew Choon Man has pledged to fulfil his election manifesto.

He said that ever since his appointment, he has performed his role as an MP to support Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as the 10th Prime Minister in forming the unity government to ensure the interim budget is passed so that the government can perform its basic function ms next year.

“As an MP, my primary duty is to oversee all federal matters in my constituency and represent my constituents to voice out all issues to the government either through Parliament or other means,” he said.

“I am responsible to my constituents, I am also responsible to the nation and Sarawak as a whole. I have to play my role as a legislator and also a parliamentary backbencher to provide check and balance to the executive.

“I have to facilitate or to monitor the federal policies, decisions and programmes to ensure that it is in the best interest of the nation and Sarawak,” he said.

Chiew said he will focus on his manifesto which is to facilitate and work towards increasing the income of the people, to assist the people in reducing the impact of the inflation, and to provide educational support to the young people.

Adding on, he said he will also assist in rebuilding the tourism sector in Miri and to serve as the platform of the people to participate in the public development project.

“For instance, I have listened to the people regarding the traffic jam at the Pujut 3 roundabout.

“I have instructed the Parliament Research Unit to retrieve all the information about the roundabout and to follow up with the relevant ministry on the project,” he added.

Chiew had also said that as an MP he also has to assist the people to deal with their day-to-day problems and complaints.

“Our office will direct the complainant or to assist the complainant to lodge and follow up their report to the relevant authorities in charge.

“We are very ambitious and have a lot of hope in Miri. At the same time, there are also a lot of work that needs to be carried out, be it my parliamentary duty, manifesto, federal issues in my constituency, local issues or any other work for a better Miri.

“However, there are limitations in our time and manpower to do all the work.

“Therefore, we would like to take this opportunity to urge the members of the public who have the goodwill and kind intention to contribute to our Miri to join our team either as volunteer or internship,” he said.
