KUCHING: Forty-nine secondary and primary schools received funds totalling RM5.9 million from the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor).

Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Roland Sagah said the funds will be used for school repairs and ICT equipment.

“This is the second year that the Sarawak government is giving aid to the mission schools.

“We feel that it is necessary to provide assistance to the mission schools and other schools,” he told reporters after officiating at the presentation of funds to Sarawak missionary schools at RAIA Hotel and Convention Centre here today.

Sagah said that since the allocation of funds by the Education Department is small, the funds from Unifor are useful as they go towards the maintenance of the schools.

“The allocations are very little because the mission schools are just aided schools and therefore when it comes to repairs, there is no allocation,” he said.

The 49 mission schools are from six divisions – Kuching (18 primary and two secondary schools); Kota Samarahan and Serian (two secondary and eight primary schools); Sri Aman (five primary and one secondary schools): Betong (110 primary and one secondary schools); and Miri (one primary school and one secondary school).
