OYA: The residents of Kampung Boom here experienced a blackout after a monkey climbed an electric pole in the area yesterday afternoon.

The incident occurred at around 2.00pm when the residents were shocked by the sound on an explosion that came from one of the electric poles in their area.

Upon checking the electric pole, they discovered that one of the electric cables had snapped.

Sesco personnel who were informed of the incident took more than two hours to repair the broken cable.

According to one of the residents, Ramlee Drun, 54, who experienced an electrical shock, he was underneath the electric cable at the time of the incident.

He said while he was walking across the wooden bridge, he saw a monkey walking on the cable and was electrocuted.

Ramlee said shortly after that, the electric cable snapped and he heard the sound of an explosion and electric sparks from the electric pole.

“The cable fell on the ground, about one metre from the wooden bridge I was crossing. Although I got electrocuted, I managed to run to safety and seek help from other villagers.

“There is a possibility that the monkey had fled to the nearby jungle as there are no signs of the monkey at the scene,” he said.
