KANOWIT: A special task force counter to tackle statelessness among residents opened at Dewan Datuk Aaron in Bawan and received a total of 61 applications from stateless residents on Tuesday.

It was organised by the Sarawak Security and Enforcement Unit (UKPS), in collaboration with the Kanowit District Office and the Sibu Division of the National Registration Department (JPN).

Ngemah assemblyman Anyi Jana visited the counter to observe the work done by UKPS and JPN, where he received a briefing on the procedures of the special task force team.

He praised the Sarawak government for its initiative in addressing the issue, particularly in rural areas.

He also extended his gratitude to UKPS, the Kanowit District Office, and JPN for its implementation and encouraged residents in Ngemah without valid identification documents to take advantage of the programme.

Meanwhile, UKPS Enforcement assistant director Petrus Basik said the task force counter was aimed to address issues affecting residents without any form of identification document and those whose citizenship status were not determined on their birth certificates.
