KUCHING: City police have been urged to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the death of a 22-year-old woman last Monday (Oct 16).

The university student was found lifeless in the wee hours at the Petanak area.

Stampin MP cum Padungan assemblyman Chong Chieng Jen, claimed her demise has raised suspicion that it may be linked to drug abuse.

In a Chinese daily’s initial report on the incident, it was stated that the university student died in an entertainment outlet, however, a police statement released on Oct 18 contradicted this, revealing that her body was found by the roadside near an entertainment outlet.

“Furthermore, the preliminary investigation found no evidence of foul play and the case was classified as a sudden death,” said Chong.

“The deceased’s family has approached me for assistance in uncovering the truth, as they are sceptical about the police’s sudden death classification.

“According to the family, a urine drug rapid test detected traces of three drugs, including methamphetamine and MDMA in the deceased’s system,” he said.

Chong pointed out that the student’s sudden death raises significant questions for the family, particularly in light of the positive drug test results.

Therefore, the police are urged to carry out a thorough investigation to uncover the truth.

He added that drug abuse has become a growing concern in Kuching as well as in the state.

“In these circumstances, when a young lady is found dead with traces of illegal drugs in her system, it is essential for the police to intensify their investigative efforts.

“The public relies on the police to protect them from the scourge of drug abuse,” he said.
