MUKAH: Package Two of the ongoing new Mukah airport project at KM7, Jalan Mukah-Oya is expected to be completed on schedule next year.

Components in the second package consist of the final formation, airfield pavement, access road, landside infrastructures and building works.

The project is located about 1km from the main road.

The contract sum of the project is RM302,637,946.81 (including Goods & Services Tax) while the contract period is from Aug 11, 2017 to Aug 10, 2020.

Tellian assemblyman Yussibnosh Balo, like many other air travellers and locals here, is anxious and hopeful about the scheduled completion of the new and bigger airport.

Yesterday, New Sarawak Tribune asked him for updates on the project.

In his reply through WhatsApp, it was stated in the contract summary that the project was 16 days ahead of schedule.

The contract summary also specified the revised completion date (Aug 24, 2020).

In response to an optimistic expectation by New Sarawak Tribune that the airport would be operational when it is completed in 2020, his reaction was, “Hopefully, because I also find it hard to get a seat to Mukah. If there is a programme not in my schedule, therefore, I have to go through Bintulu.”

When the project is completed, it is learnt that the new airport could accommodate bigger aircrafts such as Boeing 737.

The airport is located about 4km from Politeknik Mukah and UiTM Mukah Campus, as well as the ongoing Sarawak Skills Development Centre project, the coming GiatMARA and Laila Taib College projects.

The current STOLport at KM3, Jalan Mohd Pauzi only caters for small aircrafts such as the MASwings Twin Otter.

Due to the nature of the STOLport, air travel in this district is still a problem during certain occasions.
