KUCHING: The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department has identified several fire spots at the Trienekens Kuching Integrated Waste Management Park (KIWMP) in Mambong.

A department spokesperson said they used drones to monitor the site from the air and discovered many fire spots where waste is disposed of.

The hottest spot was measured at 301 degrees Celsius.

According to the spokesperson, to put out the fires, a prime mover water tanker from Tabuan Jaya fire station was sent to the scene.

The team also set up a water pump in sectors 5 and 6 of the waste disposal site.

The extinguishing operation, led by state director Datuk Khirudin Drahman and seven firemen from Siburan and Tabuan Jaya stations, has been ongoing for four days as of today (July 3).

In addition to the fire department, Trienekens staff, members of the Simpok auxiliary fire team, and officers from the Department of the Environment (DOE) and the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) are also involved in putting out the fires.

The fire initially occurred last Friday (June 30) around 8 am and was controlled and extinguished by Siburan firemen. However, it reignited early Saturday morning and spread to other parts of the waste disposal site.

At the time of this press release, the firefighting operation is still ongoing.
