KUCHING: Under the MySaveFood initiative, Malaysia has seen a reduction in food waste, saving a total of 14,000 tonnes of food nationwide.

Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) Senator Fuziah Salleh said that approximately 15,000 kg of greenhouse emissions would be reduced.

Focusing on local efforts, Fuziah detailed the food savings at various Ramadan bazaars: 199 kg at the Stutong Bazaar, 292.6 kg in Kota Samarahan, and 16.95 kg at Metrocity Bazaar.

She pointed out that the lower figure at Metrocity Bazaar was due to some stalls closing earlier than anticipated.

“We are monitoring how effectively food is saved relative to the operating hours of the stalls,” she told reporters during the Rahmah Ramadan Bazaar at Metrocity night market today (Mar 22).

Fuziah hoped to extend the MySaveFood programme beyond Hari Raya Aidilfitri, aiming to incorporate it into night markets nationwide based on its success.

Regarding food pricing, she acknowledged the challenge of high costs for imported goods like Bombay onions but observed that hawkers were still managing to profit.

She emphasised the freedom of hawkers to set their prices while stressing the role of consumers in making informed choices.

“We at KPDN are committed to safeguarding consumer rights by ensuring fair practices are maintained,” she added.
