SIBU: About 2,000 people attended the Sibu Division ‘Negaraku Sehati Sejiwa’ programme held at Sibu Town Square here yesterday.

The guest of honour officiating at the programme was chairman of Sibu Municipal Council Datuk Tiong Thai King.

Speaking at the programme, Tiong congratulated Sibu Resident’s Office for taking the initiative to organise the programme in a big scale.

“This initiative is an effort which could enhance the spirit to celebrate National Day as well as instil harmonious and team spirit of the people of Sibu,” he said.

According to him, the flying of Jalur Gemilang flags at buildings and premises could enhance better understanding of the people on the meaning of National Day.

Earlier, in his speech, Sibu Resident Hii Chang Kee said this year’s theme for National Day celebration will be ‘Negaraku Sehati Sejiwa’ or ‘My Country One Heart One Mind’.

“We may be brought up with different backgrounds, we may believe in different ideologies, we may practise different religions and we may speak different languages, but when we sing Negaraku in front of the Jalur Gemilang, we are all Malaysians with one heart and one mind. That is the spirit behind the theme of National Day celebration this year,” he said.
