SIBU: A 42-years-old local woman was deceived by a fraud syndicate with the modus operandi of the Macau scam.

When receiving the report made yesterday, Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said that the victim was contacted by an unknown number that introduces himself as an official from HSBC Bank informing that the victim had made a transaction amounting to RM3,700.

Despite denying that she has ever done the transaction nor owning any HSBC account, the victim was given a phone number and was asked to contact a Bank Negara official.

“After the victim called the number, she was instructed to download two applications named Testflight and Safty for the purpose of checking and investigating the victim’s account.

“In those applications, the victim filled in all the required details including her banking information which caused the money in her Public Bank account (RM18,500) being transferred to an unknown third-party account.

“It was then the victim realised that the call was from a scammer and not the bank officials,” he said.

With the case at hand, Zulkipli advised the public to always be vigilant and not be easily deceived by scammers.

“When receiving a call, do not panic and do not follow the instructions given by the caller without calling the police or related financial institutions first.

“It is advisable for the public to avoid answering any calls that ask for personal information, especially regarding bank accounts.

“If you receive a call asking for account information, payment or money transfers, do share the situation you’re in or get an opinion from family members, acquaintances and authorities,” he added.
