KUCHING: Sarawak is in the midst of establishing its own testing laboratory for the screening of the human papillomavirus (HPV).

Women, Family, and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri pointed out that, currently, all HPV tests must be sent to West Malaysia for lab analysis, leading to higher costs and prolonged wait times for results.

Speaking at a press conference after the launch of the KASIH Keluarga: Sarawak Cervical Cancer Screening Campaign at Wisma SABATI today, Nancy said that a building here has already been acquired for this purpose.

“We have purchased the building for testing in Kuching. At the moment, we are seeking funding for the essential equipment and machinery. We anticipate a need for an estimated RM15 million to set up the laboratory,” she said.

She added the vital role of support from the state government and the Ministry of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government.

“Collaboration is essential, given the pressing need for Sarawak to possess its own screening facility. With a local facility, we can sidestep the extra expenses and time taken by sending tests to other locations,” she said.
