New leads found as search for elderly continues

The machete and clothes believed to belong to the missing victim are found by the locals in Kampung Pendam.

LIMBANG: A machete and clothes believed to belong to an elderly man who was reported missing in Kampung Ulak, were found today.

The items were found by the locals at the riverbank in Kampung Pendam, about 3km from the Kampung Ulak search and rescue control post.

A spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said the discovery was made at around 10 am on the seventh day of the operation.

The machete and clothes were then taken to the victim’s family for confirmation.

“At 1pm, two boats led by armed policemen and drone unit were deployed to the scene to continue the search.

“The Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) has also installed traps at the location and the public are advised from disturbing, taking or visiting the trap site,” the spokesman said, adding that the victim is yet to be found.

As of 2.55 pm, the search was temporarily suspended and it will resume until Sunday as instructed by the police.

The victim identified as Sahari Mail, 66, had gone out in the afternoon on Aug 17 to look for rattan and cast a fishing net at a river.

However, he failed to return home and that prompted the locals to contact the authorities for assistance.

Authorities have reported that the victim was allegedly attacked by a crocodile while he was conducting his activities.
