KUCHING: Residents in Kuching South City kicked off the first day of the new year with a New Year Resolution Charity Run held at the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) premises.

The event, which commenced at 6am, was flagged off by Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng.

He commended the participation of some 1,850 locals, describing it as a show of love and care they have for the city.

Addressing any shortcomings, he said, “On behalf of the city council, I extend my apologies if there are areas where we may have fallen short.

“We are committed to doing our best to serve the people of Kuching. I encourage everyone to collaborate with us as we work together to improve and guide this city in the right direction,” he said.

Meanwhile, Wee noted the importance of personal responsibility for the betterment of the city.

He urged people to adhere to public health guidelines and encouraged the use of reusable bags to promote environmental sustainability.

“Please wear a mask if you’re heading to crowded places. Additionally, I encourage everyone to carry their own bag and avoid using plastic bags.

“Starting this year, we will be undertaking numerous environmental initiatives to steer our city in the right direction. Happy New Year to all; stay safe, wear a mask, and engage in regular exercise.”

Organised by the City Jogger’s Club, the annual New Year Resolution Charity Run, held on January 1 since 2015, aims to raise funds for selected non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

During the event, a cheque presentation ceremony took place, distributing donations totaling RM5,000 each to deserving recipients, including the Kuching Palliative Association, Persatuan Cerebral Palsy Bahagian Kuching Dan Samarahan (Wishesland), Mental Health Association of Sarawak, Kuching Autistic Association Resource & Education Centre, The Salvation Army Children & Youth Care Centre, and Sarawak Scout Council (Lot 51).
