KUCHING: From 2010 until March 2018, the number of investigation papers opened by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in the state has involved a total of 1,242 individuals, 537 arrests and 317 people faced charges.

MACC Deputy Chief Commissioner (Operations), Datuk Seri Azam Baki said that the performance of the state MACC from 2010 until present had been excellent and the cooperation between MACC and the state government has been really good.

“In order to tackle the issue of corruption in our country, MACC should take a very proactive approach in the operation and prevention effort.

“The proactive approach is done based on the information received either from MACC officers or other sources,” he added during the handing over of duty to the new MACC State Director, Razim Mohd Noor at MACC complex here yesterday.

Azam revealed that through the proactive actions by MACC in the state, it has improved the state’s development with lesser cases of corruption.

“However, corruption is still happening and it has become MACC’s duty and responsibility to always monitor in ensuring the sustainability of the state development,” he said.

When asked on the preparation by MACC for the coming general election, he disclosed that MACC would form a task force.

“The task force is to monitor the election situation and to monitor any cases related to offences under the Election Offences act 1954.

“We will collaborate with Election Commission (SPR) and Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) in one task force to look into cases arising during the election,” added Azam.
