KUCHING: Kuching police district registered a decrease in the crime rate index from Jan to Dec 12 this year by 13.65 percent or 201 cases.

OCPD ACP Ng Ah Lek disclosed this to the media at the monthly parade yesterday, saying last year there were 1,443 cases compared to 1,272 this year.

He said there was a significant drop in motorcycle theft, from 595 cases to 483 this year. Housebreaking cases also dropped from 16 cases.

He said the decrease could be attributed to the hard work of his men “from CID to drugs to commercial crime”.

Some 3,559 persons were arrested and six syndicates were smashed for crimes such as housebreaking, snatching and motorcycle theft.

The arrests saw 772 cases successfully brought to court.

A total of 25 persons under syndicated crimes were placed under the Crime Prevention Act (POCA) that requires them to wear the electronic ankle band device to allow police to monitor their whereabouts.
