KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) has called on medical graduates waiting for their houseman placements, to participate in the mentor-mentee programme in keeping abreast with medical knowledge.
Its president Dr Mohamed Namazie Ibrahim said through this voluntary programme, the graduates would be attached to a clinic near to their homes as a mentee.
“With the increasing number of medical graduates, it is going to be a long wait before they get called to undergo housemanship. As a result, these medical graduates are doing various odd jobs to sustain themselves financially before finally settling on a medical career.
“What worries us most is, the medical knowledge which they have gained through six tough years or more, will be gone if they do not practice medicine for quite some time,” he said in a statement yesterday.
Dr Mohamed Namazie said so far MMA received overwhelming response from general practitioners who had registered their names as mentors and were willing to provide free medical practical training.
However he said, since this was on a voluntary basis, there would be no payment involved for both mentors and mentees.
