KUCHING: “Pameran Sarawak Ibu Pertiwiku”, an exhibition on Sarawak’s Independence is now on at Plaza Merdeka Shopping Mall here until July 29. Held in conjunction with Sarawak Independence Day 2018 Celebration, the weeklong exhibition was officially launched by Chief Minister, Datuk Patinggi (Dr) Abang Johari Tun Openg yesterday.

The exhibition is organised by the Sarawak Day Event Management Committee and the State Library.

The exhibition covers history from the early periods of Sarawak and is divided into several eras, namely, The Beginning of Sarawak’s history, Sarawak Towards Independence, Sarawak: Self Governance 1963, Towards Formation Of Malaysia, Sarawak Since Formation of Malaysia. Speaking to the media after the launching, Abang Johari said the exhibition explains the early history of Sarawak from the time of Brunei Sultan rule, after that James Brooke’s rule, Japanese Occupation, the British Colonial time and then Malaysia.

“The venue is a shopping centre and it is quite strategic and will hopefully enable the public to come, see and appreciate our history from 1599,” he said.

“That will be educational exhibition so that the people are aware of the history of Sarawak,” he added. The launching of the exhibition was also attended by Deputy Chief Ministers, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Amar Haji Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, other members of the State Cabinet, Sarawak State Legislative Assembly Speaker, Datuk Amar Awang Asfia Awang Nassar, and State Secretary, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Morshidi Abdul Ghani.
