KUCHING: The 19-year-old rape victim from Kampung Daha Seroban, near Tebedu has been adopted by an non-governmental organisation (NGO) in Serian.

This was disclosed by Minister of Welfare, Community Well Being, Women, Family and Childhood Development Datuk Hajah Fatimah Abdullah after presenting a Minor Rural Project (MRP) grant at Baitulmakmur in Petra Jaya here, yesterday.

The result of the discussion was conducted with the doctor-in-charge and Serian Hospital Medical Social Work officer on August 11

The result of the discussion has decided that the 19-year-old victim will be housed in a NGO shelter in Serian while her 14-year-old sister will be placed in a Rumah Kanak-Kanak (RKK) after getting a court order. At present, both victims were at Sarawak General Hospital and will be taken to Serian Hospital next Monday.

The older victim cannot be placed in the RKK because she is over 18 and therefore she is housed in an NGO’s protective house.

It is alleged that the girls were raped by their grandfather, father and two uncles at Kampung Daha Seroban, about 40 minutes drive from Serian town and the older girl is now pregnant.

The four men (aged between 26 and 57) were arrested on August 11 after police received an initial report on the older victim, who is pregnant and has been referred to Serian Hospital.

Earlier on, a  MRP allocation of RM19,000 has been allocated to four bodies at a presentation ceremony.

The bodies, namely Pertubuhan Kebajikan & Pendidikan Nur Murni, The Carnation Club of Kuching & Samarahan, The Malaysian Red Cresent Society and Kelab Sukan Penjara Sarawak each received RM10,000, RM5,000, RM3,000 and RM1,000 respectively.
