RM3 mln to upgrade Sibu Central Market

SIBU: The Chief Minister, Datuk Patinggi (Dr) Abang Johari Tun Openg has announced an allocation of RM3 million for the upgrading works of Sibu Central Market. He made the announcement during his walkabout to the Sibu Central Market, in which he mingled with visitors and traders.

Abang Johari paid a visit to the market which is reputed to be the largest in the country with some 1,572 operators including ‘tamu’ or stalls of native hawkers comprising the Iban, Malay, Melanau and others. He said that the market has been attracting tourists and locals alike to the market. “This central market is the biggest in this region. There are 1,572 operators including stalls operating the market.

“And I think we need t o improve the faci l i t ies in the central market. Thus, I give RM3 million worth of fund to upgrade the central market so that people will feel convenient and a lot of people, including tourists will come here,” explained Abang Johari. Among the upgrading works of the central markert include replacing water supply pipes, sewage system and rain gutter, installing of security cameras, construction of suspended ceiling on the first floor, upgrading of stalls as well as food and beverages stall in the central market.

Accompanying the Chief Minister were his wife, Datin Pat inggi Dato Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang, Minister for International Trade and ECommerce, Dato S r i Wong Soon Koh, Assistant Minister for Education and Technological Research and Assistant Minister for Housing and Public Health, Dr Annuar Rapaee, Dudong State Assemblyman, Datuk Tiong Thai King, Barisan Nasional’s (BN) parliamentary candidates, Kelvin Kong (Lanang) and Datuk Wong Kee Yew (Sibu).
