KUCHING: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) which supports the federal Unity Government has reiterated that it will not be involved in any campaign programme in the six state elections in Peninsular Malaysia.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, who is also GPS chairman, said his presence during nomination day in Selayang and Ampang, Selangor, with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was to show support.

“We will not send our election machinery there. I was there (on nomination day) to show support to the unity government.

“We must be aware that what is important now is political stability; to ensure all the policies and initiatives can be implemented smoothly and promptly, to determine the future and direction of the country,” he said.

Speaking to the reporters after officiating Kuching City’s 35th anniversary celebration at the Kuching Waterfront here Tuesday, Abang Johari also thanked the Prime Minister for having a discussion together before launching the “Madani Economy: Empowering the People ” recently, which outlined the country’s economic direction.

He said though it was an informal discussion, he appreciated that Sarawak’s views and opinions had been taken into consideration.

He said it was high time for Malaysia to look into replacing coal with renewable energy, including gas turbines.

“In order for Malaysia to become competitive, we need to be investor-friendly, especially in providing sustainable resources, such as renewable energy.

“This is because financial institutions around the world have integrated environmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations into their business and decision-making processes.

“If your business (operation) is still running using energy which causes pollution, the bank will be reluctant to fund your project.”

Based on the initiatives under the Madani Economy, Abang Johari was glad it showed that the federal government was also placing emphasis on sustainability, which was in line with Sarawak’s Post Covid Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
