KUCHING: Effective today, is it no longer mandatory for private vehicles owned by Malaysians to display their physical Malaysian Vehicle Licence (LKM) or ‘road tax’ sticker on their vehicle windscreen.

They are also no longer required to carry their driving licences.

Transport Minister Loke Siew Fook announced that the two documents will be made available on the digital platform of MyJPJ application.

He said the move was part of the ministry’s efforts to digitise Road Transport Department (RTD) services.

“This will be done in stages, with the first phase involving individual private vehicles, including motorcycles, owned by Malaysians,” he was quoted as saying by Free Malaysia Today (FMT) in a news report.

The requirement under Section 20 of the Road Transport Act which states that motor vehicle licences must be fixed to and exhibited on vehicles, will no longer be enforced, he said.

FMT reported that in the first phase, certain categories of vehicles must still display their motor vehicle licences, including those owned by private firms, foreigners, commercial vehicles and public service vehicles.

Physical driving licences are still required for foreigners, holders of learners and vocational licences, as well as international driving permits.

For motorists who are not ready to move into the digital platform, they can still use the physical road tax and driving licences.

Meanwhile, Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii welcomed the new policy by the Transport Ministry.

“Problems like this will be a thing of the past. Thanks to YB Anthony Loke Siew Fook for the reform and innovation,” he said in a Facebook post.

The good news, he said, is that private vehicles owned by Malaysians no longer have to display their motor vehicle licences.

“We can download the Digital RoadTax through the MyJPJ Apps which will display all relevant information and when it is needed for checks by the JPJ officers,” said Dr Yii.
