KUCHING: Police here arrested a local man on suspicion of vandalising a political party’s flags and posters along Jalan Kampung Boyan on Sunday.

It was reported that two men had carried out such act and a police report was made by an election officer.

Kuching district police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah in a statement confirmed that they received a report pertaining to the incident around 2.30am.

“Acting on information and investigation, an ‘Op Cantas’ team managed to track down and arrested a 37-year-old suspect in Petra Jaya area.

“Efforts to track down the second suspect who is still at large, are still underway,” he said.

Background checks found that the detained suspect has three prior offences related to drug abuse.

Ahsmon said an investigation paper had been opened under Section 427 of the Penal Code for mischief, which carries a jail term of up to five years or a fine or both, upon conviction.

The public are reminded not to commit any offence under the Elections Act 1958; the Election Offences Act 1954; and the Election Regulations 1981 to ensure that the 15th general election (GE15) runs smoothly and in a harmonious atmosphere.
