BINTULU: Contraband cigarettes and liquor worth more than RM75,000 were seized in an operation aptly codenamed Ops Kontraban here, last Friday (June 18).

Marine Police personnel with assistance from the Kampung Warisan Jepak roadblock personnel, carried out an operation at Jalan Pesisir Pantai Bintulu-Kuala Tatau around 9am.

Sarawak Marine Police Region 5 commander ACP Shamsol Kassim said the enforcers stopped a suspicious-looking van driven by a 38-year-old man.

“It led to the discovery of 350 cartons of cigarettes worth RM52,500, 50 cartons of liquor worth RM8,252.64, and 100 cartons of beer worth RM16,505.28. The contraband goods are valued at RM77,257.92.

“Following further checks, the driver failed to produce any documented evidence of ownership of the goods,” he told.

The suspect and the seized items were handed over to the Bintulu police.

The case is being investigated under Section 135 (1) (d) of the Customs Act 1967.
