Outstanding Sarawak athletes get rewards totalling over RM700k

MANDATE... Sarawak Tourism, Arts and Tourism Minister and Sarawak Youth and Sports Minister, Datuk Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah at the Malaysian Sports Incentive Presentation in Kuching yesterday.

KUCHING: A total of RM710,250 in incentives were given to athletes by the Sarawak government for their achievements in 2021 and 2022.

Sarawak Minister for Youth, Sport and Entrepreneur Development (MYSED), Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said of the total, RM68,000 was distributed to athletes who competed at SEA Games 2021; RM23,000 for Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games; RM109,000 for 2022 Para Asean Games and RM510,250 for Sukma XX 2022.

“Congratulations and well done to all the athletes who received the incentives. You have elevated Sarawak’s name and I hope that other athletes would be inspired to become champions as well,” he said at the presentation of the incentives here on Thursday (Feb 9).

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg was present to hand out the incentives.

Also in attendance were MYSED deputy ministers Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu and Dr Ripin Lamat; Sarawak Minister for Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development, Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah; MYSED permanent secretary Morshidi Fredrick and other guests.

For the record, Sarawak finished fourth overall at Sukma XX 2022 in Kuala Lumpur with 32 gold, 42 silver and 52 bronze medals.

Sarawak also won four gold, 11 silver and 15 bronze medals at SEA Games 2021 in Hanoi, Vietnam; one gold and three silver medals at Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and clinched 11 gold, three silver and two bronze at Para Asean Games 2022 in Solo, Indonesia.
