Outstanding Unimas athletes feted

KUCHING: About 200 athletes were feted by Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) for their achievements throughout the year.

A ceremony was organised last Thursday at Merdeka Palace Hotel here, attended by Unimas board of directors chairman Datuk Seri Panglima Sulong Matjeraie, vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Kadim Suaidi, deputy vice-chancellor (research and innovation) Prof Dr Wan Hashim Wan Ibrahim, registrar Henry Tening Sengeng, Sports Centre director Prof Dr Azhaili Baharun, faculty deans and heads, among others.

“We are so proud of the achievements of our athletes, especially those at institution and national levels.

“Besides that, the success in organising the Unimas International Regatta at Unimas Lake in October has become a stepping stone for us to organise bigger events in the future,” said Prof Azhaili.

Prof Kadim reiterated that sports was “clearly a platform that can foster social harmony”.

He hoped that the athletes would maintain their level and success before adding, “Unimas’ development and achievement in sports have grown and improved, especially in water sports”.

During the dinner, 23 athletes received medals and certificates, including 10 special recipients.

The 10 were Hamdan Mohamad (kayak), Sally Yap Yu Ying (kayak and rowing), Evvia Veno (kayak and rowing), Nazrin Wagiman (tenpin bowling), Clinton Ngawal Stephen (kayak and rowing), Adam Fabian (karate), Abner Lu Chun Lik (tenpin bowling), Celin Grace Aloysius (karate), and the mixed rowing team and men’s rowing team.
