KUCHING: Marine police seized contraband beers worth over RM20,000 from a lorry during an operation carried out last Thursday.

Sarawak Marine Police Region 5 commander ACP Shamsol Kassim said the ‘Ops Benteng’ raid was carried out by a Marine Intelligence Unit around 10.30am.

The team noticed the suspicious lorry at Jalan Belatok, Taman Malihah and stopped it for inspections.

It led to the discovery of 170 cartons of beer believed to be uncustomed goods worth over RM20,000.

“The 25-year-old driver failed to produce any valid documents from the Customs Department and was arrested to facilitate investigations.

“The contraband goods including the lorry valued at RM100,000 were seized and taken to Batu Kawa police station for further actions,” he said.

Shamsol said the case is being investigated under the Customs Act 1967.
