Firemen extinguishes the fire at the front part of the lorry

TANJONG MANIS: The Fire and Rescue Team identified the two men who died of electrocution after the excavator arm transported by their lorry got entangled with an overhead electric cable in Jalan Semalau, here.

Tanjong Manis Fire and Rescue Station chief Wan Umar Wan Alek, said that from information obtained from the Police, victims were Hii Sieh King, 61, a local resident trailer driver and the lorry driver, Al Bari Mahmud, 34, an Indonesian citizen.

“Both victims are ditch cleaning contract workers. At the time of the incident, the lorry involved is believed to have exited the Irrigation and Drainage Department (DID) Scheme area onto the main road in front of Semalau’s long house,” he said in a statement.

The Fire Department received a report regarding the incident at 9.15am yesterday before rushing to the location to perform a rescue operation.

Upon arrival at the location, the firemen found the two victims lying under the lorry, next to the driver’s seat while the tires on the front of the vehicle were burnt.

“We used the Rescue, Exposure, Confinement, Extinguish, Overhaul (RECEO) technique because there is still electricity on the two heavy machines involved in addition to seeking help from Sarawak Energy.

“The extinguishing operation was carried out after the electricity flow was successfully cut off however both victims have been confirmed dead by health workers,” he said.

Wan Umar said, as a follow-up action, both victim’s remains was then handed over to the police.
