KUCHING: The top posts in Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) — won unopposed — showed the confidence and loyalty of members in the leadership, says PBB secretary-general Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.

When asked whether or not the trend of winning uncontested would become a party tradition, he said he would not know but it had always been like this.

“The last convention, there was no election at all levels, it’s the second time except for the main party.

“If we hear the deputy president’s speech just now, it looks like it’s going to be like this, but we must understand the underlying factor — with all confidence in leadership and loyalty among party members, there is no need for much competition in the party,” he pointed out.

He said this when met by the media after the after the joint opening of the PBB Youth and Women wings triennial delegates convention (TDC) at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here today.

Commenting on the proposal of establishing a special youth wing for those aged 18 to 28, he said PBB had programmes and strategies to absorb them into the political arena.

“We need to groom the youth to play their role in politics as we hope for them to be the leaders in the future.”

When asked on future plans to involve school students or students of higher learning institutions in politics, he said this was a good idea but must be studied throughly.

“Now they are voters at that age and at the same time we want to be careful. We don’t want politics to take too much attention from what they are doing as students.

“We have certain programmes as well, how to get them involved but at the same time we want to be careful, not to distract them too much from their studies.”
