SIBU: Efforts to further develop Ngemah town are now in the planning stage, said assemblyman, Anyi Jana.

According to him among the proposed plans is to upgrade the existing Nanga Ngemah market which is the main economic centre for people in the area.

“Nanga Ngemah town has unique and historical features but unfortunately it is not well maintained,” he said after officiating at the Majlis Ngiling Bidai Gereja Methodist Sibu Jaya yesterday.

“When it is upgraded later, we think maybe the waterfront will be built there so it will add another face to the Nanga Ngemah market which will attract visitors who pass by the town to Kapit,” he said.

He added that apart from upgrading the existing market, there are plans to build a new one.

“We are planning to upgrade as well as to construct a new one. There is already planning. The new one will be built at the intersection of the new bridge,” he said.

During the last state assembly sitting Anyi had voiced concerns over the dilapidated Nanga Ngemah Market which is in dire need of an upgrade.

The market which is located approximately 40km from Kanowit town and 20km from Song town, is a well-known stopover for travelers passing through Nanga Ngemah.
