SEREMBAN: The police are to deploy an adequate number of officers and personnel to ensure a smooth by-election for the Rantau state seat.

Negeri Sembilan Police acting chief SAC Datuk Mohamad Mat Yusop said yesterday the police would add on more personnel from time to time if the need arises.

“We have visited the nomination centre, polling stations and vote-tallying centre with the Election Commission (EC) officials. Everything is in order. The police will be around throughout the by-election, from nomination tomorrow up to polling.

“We hope the by-election will be smooth. The party supporters and the public must play their role and not cause problems,” he told reporters here.

The nomination will be at the Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (C) Bandar Sri Sendayan here. Polling is on April 13 and early voting on April 9.

Mohamad said he expected about 3,000 people to turn up for the nomination today.

The by-election has been necessitated by the Federal Court dismissal of an appeal filed by Umno deputy president and former Negeri Sembilan menteri besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan to set aside the Nov 16 Seremban Election Court decision declaring his unopposed victory in the 14th general election (GE14) null and void.

In GE14, Mohamad was declared the winner of the seat for Barisan Nasional (BN) after Dr Streram, an anaesthetist, the potential Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate, was prohibited from entering the nomination centre to submit his nomination papers because he did not have a pass issued by the EC.

The Rantau constituency has 29,926 registered electors, comprising 20,804 ordinary voters, 118 early voters and four absentee voters. – Bernama
