Hung

A stylish pop-up phenomenon

Gillian Hung, also known as the esteemed Mama G, is difficult to get hold of as she has been quite busy since entering the fashion industry some decades ago.

She is full of life, greets you gleefully, and before you can enjoy a long conversation with her, she is gone, her voice fading away apologetically. No worries, she will appear later before a friend or customer comes to whisk her away.

That was the situation witnessed lately at her pop-up store in Isetan, The Gardens Mall in Kuala Lumpur. It was a good sign as it meant that the pop-up store concept had been successful in drawing her friends and customers to her MMG fashion products in a reputable store like Isetan.

Hung became the youngest Fashion and Design Director of Isetan Japan at the age of 24 after winning the first-ever ASEAN Young Designers’ Competition in 1989, which landed her in the Malaysian Book of Records.

She has been making waves in the fashion industry ever since, from runways to fashion events both locally and internationally. You thought you’d seen the last of her when she left for China for 10 years.

On the contrary, this amazing lady simply bounced back to launch the Hung Innovation Awards, which was held on November 25, 2022. Its purpose was to bring recognition to those in the fashion industry.

Mama G is highly regarded by many for her commitment to inspiring young designers and helping them navigate the fiercely competitive industry. We met with some young designers who even assisted her that busy afternoon.

Even though she is no longer the president of the Malaysian Official Designers’ Association (MODA), she remains in close contact with the association. MODA president Jay Ishak was spotted in the front row for the fashion show.

The MMG pop-up store was packed by the time the fashion show started. Guests tried on outfits, shoes, and other trendy accessories.

Models walked around her pop-up space during the fashion show. Several audience members were quite engaging, calling out to some of their friends who were modelling. Everything about it was like a party, with people mingling and enjoying bite-sized food and drinks.

The Master Mind Gen (MMG) Fashion Pop-Up Launch featured street fashion, which is a current fashion trend. The outfits have some bling-bling, and with sequins on the shoes; they make perfect party outfits that are still out of the box.

MMG sweatshirt collections are all about style and comfort. Sweatshirts are no longer limited to the sports section, and when paired with a flashy shirt on the inside, they make you stand out.

We love her jackets, which were edgy and rugged yet cool. Some are in black denim, while others are in blue denim.

Enter the dragon, but with a black top! The model made a dramatic entrance when he flashed his dragon shirt, and the audience went “Wow!”

The Year of the Green Wood Dragon will begin on February 10, 2024 and end on January 28, 2025. If you want to have a good dragon year, get this stunning MMG shirt!

“I’ve been very busy with our pop-up store since we started last week. We now only have time to replenish our stocks,” said Hung, the MMG Creative, Branding and Merchandising Consultant who throughout her career in Malaysia, New York and China always yearned for more creative fulfilment to learn.

For your information, the pop-up concept came from the online world and its pop-up windows that appear as you surf the web.

The pop-up stores, like the windows, are just temporary. They appear suddenly and disappear after a short period of time, which might range from a few hours to a few months.

Given the current trend, we may see more MMG pop-ups!
