SIBU: A total of 300 containers of bubur lambuk (savoury porridge) and 300 containers of kurma (dates) were distributed to residents of Kampung Usahajaya Baru, Sentosa, Salim here, last Thursday.

The programme was organised by Bukit Assek Service Centre and Sarawak United National Youth Organisation (SABERKAS) Bukit Assek Branch in conjunction with Ramadan.

According to Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek, the programme aimed to foster the importance of strengthening racial unity and religious harmony among SABERKAS members.

“Our SABERKAS members consist of Chinese, Iban, and Malay, with the majority being Chinese, but we want to celebrate it together with our Muslim friends here.

“It is very important for us in Malaysia, especially in Sarawak, to practise racial diversity and harmony, and we have many celebrations that require us to understand and celebrate each festival together, such as the distribution of this bubur lambuk and kurma,” he said.

He said this when met by reporters after the programme in front of Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sentosa here today (March 22).

Chieng, who is also the SABERKAS Bukit Assek Branch chairman, said that he hopes the programmes could educate the younger generation, especially SABERKAS members, to understand the culture of others and religions to further strengthen unity and harmony.

“I hope that SABERKAS Bukit Assek Branch and our service centre will organise more activities with other races during the upcoming festive seasons,” he added.
