KUCHING: It was a truly fruitful discussion among the industry players at the recent CERAWeek 2024, held in Texas.

Representing the Sarawak government, Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability, Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni said CERAWeek highlighted the varying needs in energy transition approaches for each country or region as they heavily depend on geophysical, economic, social, and environmental factors unique to each nation or region.

“This endeavour requires integrated global support and approaches.

“On the fourth day session of CERAWeek, prominent entrepreneur, philanthropist, and founder of Breakthrough Energy and TerraPower, Bill Gates emphasised in his speech that energy companies worldwide are seeking locations capable of providing green energy supply at reasonable costs,” he said.

He added that Sarawak, as a global industrial player, will continue to strengthen the development of clean energy sources.

“Our energy sources will also increase through solar energy, hydroelectricity through existing dams, new dams, and small dams, as well as hydrogen sources through projects such as H2biscus with Korea by 2028.

“Additionally, Sarawak is also exploring the potential of biofuel energy, synthetic oil (e-fuels) & offshore wind as part of the planned energy transition initiatives.”

He said Gates’ opinion emphasising the crucial role of innovation, particularly in artificial intelligence (AI), as a driver of progress.

“The advancements in AI could transform healthcare systems, medicine discoveries, and access to new technologies, ultimately shaping a fairer world by reducing the gap between high and low-income countries.”
