KUCHING: The Sarawak Health Department (JKN) has clarified that water condensation and fungus at the ceiling of Sibu Hospital had been rectified although the issue has persisted due to several factors.

JKN director Dr. Ooi Choo Huck said that since the issue was reported in 2019, repair works had been carried out by Sibu Hospital.

He pointed out that after the work to upgrade the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) ward in 2022, condensation and fungus problems became more apparent.

“Following that, the concession company made an investigation and has recommended that a comprehensive repair for the cold water piping system and insulation should be done,” he said.

According to him, the wards involved are still in use as Sibu Hospital is the main Specialist Hospital in the Central Sarawak Zone.

He pointed out that closure of the affected wards may disrupt clinical services and inpatient specialist treatment for the Central Sarawak Zone.

“As such, Sibu Hospital has implemented a number of preventive measures to reduce the risk of injury such as the installation of slippery floor signs, water drip trays and safety nets. On top of that, JKN Sarawak has applied for financial allocation from the ministry.

“We will also submit an application for allocation for overall improvement work for Sibu Hospital. JKN Sarawak takes the issue seriously so that the best and quality services can be delivered to patients,” he said.
